The Do's and Don'ts of Skincare

Listen. Skincare is actually really hard. There's about a million products on the market, they all have wild claims, and if you're reading this article, it's probably because you're standing in an Ulta and wondering wtf is even happening.

We've been developing skincare using natural ingredients for many years- and we've also stood in that god forsaken Ulta.

Luckily, there are some super basic rules that everyone should follow. If you can nail just a few basic ideas, you'll be better equipped to actually make a choice under the gaze of those obnoxiously perfect looking makeup ladies.

Do: Know Your Skin Type

First things first, know thy skin! Is it oily, dry, combination, sensitive, or normal?

Understanding your skin type is crucial because it dictates the kind of products you should be using.

For instance, oily skin benefits from gel-based, non-comedogenic products, while dry skin craves richer, hydrating creams.

Sensitive skin? Look for products with soothing ingredients like aloe vera and chamomile.

Knowing your skin type helps you tailor your routine to its specific needs, preventing breakouts and irritation.

Don’t: Over-Exfoliate

Exfoliation is a fantastic way to slough off dead skin cells and reveal a brighter complexion.

However, too much of a good thing can be harmful. Over-exfoliating can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to irritation, redness, and even breakouts. Stick to exfoliating 2-3 times a week if you have normal or combination skin, and less often if your skin is sensitive.

Gentle is the name of the game here—think mild scrubs or chemical exfoliants like AHAs and BHAs.

Do: Use Sunscreen Daily

Sunscreen is non-negotiable. UV rays are a primary cause of premature aging and can lead to skin cancer.

Even on cloudy days or when you're indoors, UV rays can reach your skin.

A broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 should be part of your daily routine. Apply it as the last step of your morning skincare routine, and reapply every two hours if you’re outside.

Trust me, your future self will thank you!

Don’t: Sleep with Makeup On

After a long day, it might be tempting to hit the sack without removing your makeup. Resist the urge! Sleeping with makeup on can clog your pores, leading to breakouts and dull skin.

Plus, your skin repairs itself at night, and having a clean face allows it to breathe and regenerate properly.

Make makeup removal a non-negotiable part of your nighttime routine—your skin will look fresher and healthier.

Also- there is something truly freeing about not wearing makeup at all. Luckily the 'clean girl' aesthetic has recently become popular (those of us who had an emo phase could only be so lucky- I still have black eyeliner behind my eyeballs I'm pretty sure)

Do: Stay Hydrated

Hydration isn’t just about what you put on your skin but also what you put in your body.

Drinking enough water keeps your skin hydrated from the inside out. Aim for at least eight glasses a day to help maintain skin elasticity and overall health.

Additionally, using a good moisturizer that suits your skin type helps lock in hydration and keep your skin looking plump and youthful.

Don’t: Use Too Many Products

In the age of Instagram influencers and beauty bloggers, it’s easy to fall into the trap of overloading your skin with products.

More isn’t always better. Using too many products can overwhelm your skin, leading to irritation and making it harder to identify what’s actually working for you.

Stick to a simple routine: cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen are your basics. Add serums and treatments as needed, but always patch test new products to see how your skin reacts.

Do: Be Gentle with Your Skin

Your skin isn’t a piece of tough leather—it’s a delicate organ that requires gentle care.

When cleansing, use your fingertips instead of a rough washcloth.

Pat your skin dry with a soft towel rather than rubbing it.

Avoid products with harsh ingredients like alcohol and sulfates that can strip your skin of its natural oils.

Treat your skin with kindness, and it will reward you with a healthy glow.

Don’t: Pick at Your Skin

We’ve all been there—staring at a pimple in the mirror, fingers itching to pop it. But picking at your skin can lead to scarring, infection, and more breakouts.

Instead, treat blemishes with a targeted spot treatment containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. If you're like us and you'd rather not go to extremes, a little tea tree oil, witch hazel and aloe can go a long way. We've got an excellent Blemish Tonic!

If you struggle with acne, consult a dermatologist for advice tailored to your skin's needs. Your skin will heal faster and look better if you keep your hands off!

Do: Use Natural Ingredients that Benefit Your Skin

Mother Nature has some serious skincare game! Incorporating natural ingredients into your routine can provide gentle yet effective benefits for your skin. Here are some natural superstars you should consider:

Witch Hazel: This natural astringent is fantastic for oily and acne-prone skin. It helps tighten pores, reduce inflammation, and control excess oil without over-drying your skin. Plus, it's gentle enough for sensitive skin.

Aloe Vera: Known for its soothing and hydrating properties, aloe vera is a go-to for calming irritated or sunburned skin. It's rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making it a great all-around healer.

Tea Tree Oil: A natural antiseptic, tea tree oil is excellent for treating acne. Its antimicrobial properties help to reduce bacteria on the skin, preventing breakouts. Just be sure to dilute it with a carrier oil to avoid irritation.

Rose Water: This floral favorite is not only refreshing but also helps to maintain the skin’s pH balance and control excess oil. It's soothing, hydrating, and perfect for all skin types.

Chamomile: Often found in calming teas, chamomile also works wonders for sensitive and irritated skin. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce redness and soothe skin.

Green Tea Extract: Packed with antioxidants, green tea extract can help fight free radicals, reduce inflammation, and improve overall skin health. It’s great for calming irritated skin and reducing signs of aging.

Honey: This sweet treat is a natural humectant, meaning it helps to retain moisture in the skin. It also has antibacterial properties, making it beneficial for acne-prone skin. Use raw honey as a mask for a hydrating, antibacterial boost.

Jojoba Oil: Closely resembling the skin's natural sebum, jojoba oil is an excellent moisturizer that doesn't clog pores. It's suitable for all skin types and can help balance oil production in oily skin.

Cucumber Extract: Known for its cooling and hydrating properties, cucumber extract is perfect for soothing puffy, tired skin. It's also great for reducing inflammation and redness.

Shea Butter: A rich, natural moisturizer, shea butter is perfect for dry skin. It’s loaded with vitamins A and E, which help improve skin elasticity and maintain a healthy glow.

Don’t: Ignore Your Neck and Hands

Skincare shouldn’t stop at your jawline. Your neck and hands are just as exposed to environmental stressors and can show signs of aging if neglected.

Extend your skincare routine to your neck and hands, applying sunscreen, moisturizer, and any serums you use on your face.

This helps maintain a more youthful appearance overall and prevents the telltale signs of aging from creeping up in unexpected places.

Do: Give Your Skin Time to Adjust

When you introduce new products into your routine, patience is key. It can take weeks to see visible results, and switching products too frequently can confuse your skin and cause more harm than good.

Stick with a new product for at least 4-6 weeks to truly gauge its effectiveness. This allows your skin to adjust and respond to the active ingredients properly.

Don’t: Skip Moisturizer Because You Have Oily Skin

Oily skin still needs moisture. Skipping moisturizer can actually make your skin produce more oil to compensate for the dryness.

Opt for a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer that hydrates without clogging pores. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin are great for adding hydration without the heaviness.

Keeping your skin balanced with the right moisturizer can help control oil production and reduce shine.

Do: Follow a Consistent Routine

Consistency is key in skincare. While it’s tempting to try every new product that hits the market, sticking to a regular routine gives your skin stability and allows it to thrive.

A basic routine of cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection, with the addition of targeted treatments as needed, will keep your skin in its best condition.

Consistency helps maintain skin health and makes it easier to identify what works and what doesn’t.

Don’t: Expect Overnight Results

Skincare is a journey, not a sprint. While it’s natural to want immediate results, most skincare products take time to show their full effects.

Be patient and give your skin the time it needs to respond to treatments. Avoid the temptation to switch products too quickly—stick with your routine and allow it to work its magic over time.

Don’t: Forget to Enjoy the Process

Lastly, remember that skincare should be a form of self-care and something you enjoy.

Taking a few minutes each day to pamper your skin can be a relaxing and rewarding ritual. Embrace the process, learn what works for you, and have fun discovering new products and techniques that make your skin feel its best.

Keep these tips in mind, and you'll be well on your way to achieving a healthy, radiant complexion. Assuming that the section on natural ingredients piqued your interest- let's dive in to the star of that list for unhappy skin- tea tree oil
