How to Make Your Skincare Routine More Sustainable

How to Make Your Skincare Routine More Sustainable

Sustainability is a buzzword that's gaining traction across various industries, and the beauty industry is no exception.

With increasing awareness of environmental issues (the fucking planet is dying bro), many people are looking to make their skincare routines more eco-friendly.

If you’re passionate about taking care of your skin and the planet, this guide is for you. Here are some practical steps to make your skincare routine more sustainable without sacrificing efficacy.

Choose Eco-Friendly Brands

The first step towards a sustainable skincare routine is to choose products from brands that prioritize sustainability. Look for companies that use eco-friendly practices in their production processes, such as using renewable energy, reducing water usage, and minimizing waste.

Brands that are transparent about their sourcing and manufacturing practices are usually more trustworthy. Check if they have certifications like USDA Organic, Fair Trade, or Cruelty-Free, which indicate a commitment to sustainable practices.

Support Local and Small Businesses

Supporting local and small businesses can also make your skincare routine more sustainable. These businesses often have a smaller carbon footprint compared to large corporations because their products travel shorter distances to reach you.

Additionally, small businesses tend to focus on quality and sustainability, using locally sourced ingredients and eco-friendly packaging.

Shopping at farmers' markets or local health food stores can help you discover artisanal skincare products that are both effective and sustainable.

While we obviously want you to buy from Simple Soul Skincare, the honest truth is that it is even BETTER for the planet if you buy something that doesn't need to be shipped.

Use Multi-Functional Products

Simplifying your skincare routine with multi-functional products can reduce the number of items you need, thereby decreasing waste.

For example, a moisturizer with SPF can replace your separate sunscreen and moisturizer products. Similarly, a tinted moisturizer can eliminate the need for both foundation and moisturizer.

Products like BB creams, which combine moisturizer, primer, SPF, and foundation, are excellent for this purpose. This not only reduces the number of products you purchase but also streamlines your skincare routine.

Reduce Water Usage

Sustainability isn't just about the products you use; it's also about how you use them. Reducing water usage during your skincare routine can have a significant environmental impact.

Try to use less water when washing your face, and turn off the tap while applying products.

Choose Natural and Organic Ingredients

Opting for skincare products made from natural and organic ingredients can reduce your environmental impact.

Organic farming practices typically use fewer pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, which are better for the environment. Natural ingredients are also biodegradable, reducing pollution when they wash down the drain.

Look for products with ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, and green tea, which are not only beneficial for your skin but also have a lower environmental footprint.

Recycle and Upcycle Packaging

Proper disposal of skincare product packaging is crucial for sustainability. Many skincare products come in plastic containers that can be recycled. Make sure to clean them thoroughly before recycling. Some brands, like MAC and Kiehl’s, offer recycling programs where you can return empty containers for rewards or discounts.

Upcycling is another creative way to handle packaging waste. Glass jars can be repurposed for storage, and plastic containers can be used for organizing small items. Pinterest is a great resource for finding upcycling ideas.

Be Mindful of Ingredients

Certain ingredients in skincare products can be harmful to the environment. For example, microbeads, commonly found in exfoliating products, are tiny plastic particles that can pollute oceans and harm marine life. Opt for products with natural exfoliants like sugar, salt, or ground nuts instead.

Educate Yourself and Spread Awareness

Finally, educating yourself about sustainable skincare practices and spreading awareness can amplify your impact.

Stay informed about the latest research and trends in sustainable beauty, and share your knowledge with friends and family.

Social media is a powerful tool for raising awareness and advocating for more sustainable practices in the beauty industry.

Follow influencers and brands that prioritize sustainability, and engage in discussions about eco-friendly skincare. By making informed choices and encouraging others to do the same, you can contribute to a more sustainable future.

One of the major reasons we're in the situation we're in now is because a small number of old white assholes didn't get enough public backlash when they should have (and by that I mean in the 1970s-1990s). Today, we have tiktok, instagram, twitter, facebook and a whole host of other means by which each and every human can have and amplify their voice.

They didn't start the french revolution with the guillotine- but it wouldn't hurt to remind folks that we can still theoretically build one.

***Disclaimer: please do not physically attack your politicians. Just make their lives a living hell socially. One of my favorite hobbies is emailing Mitch McConnell pictures of cabbages. Hopefully they remind him of his home on the Galapagos Islands and he can go back there to lay his eggs in peace.

What Do I Do Now?

Making your skincare routine more sustainable doesn’t have to be complicated. By choosing eco-friendly brands, opting for refillable products, supporting local businesses, and being mindful of your water usage and ingredients, you can significantly reduce your environmental impact.

Incorporate multi-functional products, DIY solutions, and proper recycling habits into your routine for an even greater effect. Educating yourself and others about sustainable practices will help drive positive change in the beauty industry.

Start with small steps, like understanding ethical sourcing, and you’ll be on your way to a greener, cleaner skincare routine.
